Building Blocks Summer Program for Autism

Our Summer Program typically runs from mid-June through early August. Check our calendar for exact dates. The program is held at the Building Blocks Center for Autism located at 175 Deer Run Road in Danville, Virginia. The following is a SAMPLE schedule from a previous year. The schedule may vary from year to year.

Program Offerings

Individual Sessions: Monday – Thursday, 9am – 1pm

Individual (1:1) sessions are appropriate for children with a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Sessions will focus on maintenance and generalization of skills targeted during the school year, as well as other concerns noted by the child’s educational team.  Teaching modalities include: Natural Environment Teaching/Play Therapy, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Applied Behavior Analysis, and Social Skills.

Group Sessions: Monday – Thursday, 9am – 1pm

Group sessions are appropriate for children with a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Sessions will focus on maintenance and generalization of skills targeted in a group classroom setting during the school year, as well as other concerns noted by the child’s educational team.

Social Skills Group:  Monday – Thursday, 9am – 1pm

Social Skills Group is appropriate for children with a diagnosis of Asperger’s or High-Functioning Autism.  Participants should not exhibit aggressive or self-injurious behaviors or have a significant language impairment. Students will learn and generalize appropriate social skills in various environments including:  how to make friends, deal with frustration, carry on a conversation and much more while having lots of FUN!

Social Skills Training:  Monday – Thursday, 1pm – 2pm

Social Skills training is appropriate for all children ages 2-14 on the spectrum.  Children participating in the Social Skills Training will be divided into one of three groups determined by age and skill level. Each group, with the assistance of peer models, will target specific social skills related to peer interaction and play instruction as they rotate through two week sessions to ensure mastery of the skill(s) targeted.  The three sessions are Motivational Movement, Encouraging Excitement, and Absolute Adventure.

Optional Services:  Friday, 9am – 12pm

Optional Friday services are appropriate for all children on the spectrum, no matter functioning level.  The purpose of Friday services is to generalize skills being taught during the week.
